Trash art: Jars

The average american generates 4.6 pounds of trash EVERYDAY. All this trash goes into landfills or is dumped into rivers while only 1.5 pounds of it is recycled. THAT is a lot of trash. What if I told you could lessen the carbon foot print ALL THAT GARBAGE would've made on the planet, SAVE MONEY on the things you could have bought all by miraculously turning a piece of trash into art. Yeah, this post is all about that, more specifically transforming used glass jars into pretty or cool or whatever you want it to be.

                                                      THE JAR PROJECT

Glass jars are commonly used to package everyday things like pasta sauce or salsa. They come in all shapes and sizes and are very useful for storing things and are fun and easy to decorate. Plus, they're super versatile in terms of how to use and decorate. This post provides general info on reusing glass jars. .

                                                             Creating a blank jar

The first step to reusing a jar is to get rid of its labels and bringing to its clear, see-through form again so that it is ready to be decorated or hold your most precious possessions.

Using soap and water : works really well for the label

1. Mix warm water and detergent

2. Soak the jar in it overnight

3.Pick up the jar and peel the label right off

Using nail polish remover : works well with the leftover label and the adhesive

1. Take some nail polish remover ( with acetone )

2. Apply it on a cotton ball or napkin

3. Rub it on the label to scrape it right off ( it should also get rid of that sticky glue residue )

 Use a jar:

There are plenty of ways to use a jar. Here's a few:

-Decorate it:
Use some patterned paper, stamps, beads, paint or really anything that you can stick to decorate a glass jar. You can use decorated jars as pencil holders, time capsules ( just put in things from a particular year in it ), coin jars, snow globes, decor, candle jars etc. Oh, and did i mention, ITS SUPER FUN TO DECORATE THEM!?

Oooooooooooooo.... PRETTY JARS :) here's some inspiration:

-Store food:
Clear jars are perfect for storing food. You can see whats in them, which helps keep things organized and they're durable.

-Storing ANYTHING:
Basically, using a used jar is no different that using a new one. A jar is a jar and jars are used for storing things. Decorating them or not is your choice.

That's it for now.

Stay Green,
Penny :)
